Saturnia, Italy 2019
A friend whose partner is Italian said: why don’t you meet us there? I spent a long weekend with the boys and they spoiled me. We had a simple, amazing time; going on daytime drives to the beach, drinking wine, eating pizza and gelato. In four days, we saw Tuscany, Cinque Terre and the little city he’s from. On this day, we went to the thermal springs in Saturnia. It was cold outside, so we spent the whole day in the water. We just took our swimsuits and neither of us wanted to get the camera from the car. A little while before it was time to go, he said he was going to get us some wine and I asked if he could bring the camera. Just before we left, I took two photos — one was good and the other was not. (You can understand why the photograph isn’t that sharp!) Often people can’t explain what it is they like about it — it’s a bit mysterious, a little bit dreamy, and that’s exactly how the weekend was. I’d never travelled with those friends before, but it turned out to be colourful and sweet and lovely, as is reflected in the time we spent in the Saturnia.
What do you first focus on when you look at this? Despite the contrasting colours and bold composition, I can't help but be drawn to the people, first as a whole, then specific groups, exchanges and dynamics.

Framing & Hanging Tips
I imagine it being appreciated best somewhere serene as, despite the movement in the photograph, it captures the natural calm and tranquillity of the hot springs. With so many little details to take in, a corridor or sitting room where you spend a lot of time makes sense, in a simple wooden frame. It works well alongside the other in the series, Free Your Mind II, or with a similar watery palette, like Fish Texture.
