San Miguel Allende, Mexico 2019
The Gardener was taken during a trip to Mexico. I went to do a workshop on street photography in Mexico, so for those days I was just breathing photography. I was searching for beautiful or meaningful images and, when I finally found the gardener, I knew it was a good photo — I’d just had to wait a little bit. A lot of people were passing by and the light was just beautiful and dramatic, and it was as if I’d cast the gardener to be there. All of a sudden — I call them twins as they’re both wearing black and they walk in the same way — when they crossed the street, I took two photos and I knew I had the image I was looking for. Next day I went back there, I still found the beautiful house, the nice light and quite an interesting subject passed in front but I didn't find the gardener.
What do you imagine is on the gardener’s mind? Do you think he’s watching the people walking or just deep in thought? Maybe he’s just enjoying the sun on his face. The two figures wearing black — what is their story? Imagine yourself there, on that buzzy and colourful street — the warmth, the texture of the cobbles beneath your soles, the feeling of the sun on your skin, the noise of people going about their days.
